Exploring the meaning of Mindfulness
Mindfulness. “Being aware of moment-to-moment experience in a clear, and balanced manner.” – Kristin Neff and Christopher Germer
Mind-less
I know what it is to be mind-less. It’s when my attention scatters, unable to land on a single thought or task. Ideas drift in and out like clouds, weightless and unfocused. In these moments, it’s only a flicker of awareness—like a sudden jolt—that pulls me back. I catch myself. I notice the drift. And for a second, I become mind-aware.
Mind-ful
Then there’s mind-full. That’s where I find myself now. Life feels heavy. I’m navigating some of its bigger challenges, and while I’m doing my best to problem-solve, to take action, I also know I’m side-stepping the emotional weight of it all. I’m trying to outrun discomfort, and in doing so, my mind has become too full.
Too many to-dos. Too many thoughts. Too many unanswerable questions.
The overload leads to rumination—a loop that narrows my focus and distorts my perspective. I feel trapped in my own mind.
Wisdom
“To learn which questions are unanswerable, and not to answer them: this skill is most needful in times of stress and darkness.” – Ursula K. le Guin
Wisdom is my current guiding word. That, and the reminder that I am human. And all humans are works in progress. I’m committed to showing up and doing the inner work—building self-compassion and learning to respond rather than react.
Each day, I return to mindfulness.
Through daily meditation, I find balance. I build inner strength. Even now, though I feel a little lost, I trust that doesn’t mean I can’t be found.
